What is a backorder?

A backorder is a request to take over an already-registered domain name as soon as it becomes available.

When does a domain become available?

A registered .nl domain can become available for several reasons: the current owner stops paying their annual invoice, cancels the registration, goes bankrupt, or simply forgets to renew with their provider. SIDN then places the domain into a quarantine period before it is finally released.

What is SIDN quarantine?

After a .nl domain is cancelled or expires, SIDN (the registry that runs the .nl namespace) first places it into a quarantine period. Only after that period ends is the domain actually released for new registration. ByCom monitors this status for you and publishes a live list of domains currently in quarantine.

How does ByCom check availability?

Our system checks the status of every backorder against the SIDN registry automatically and at high frequency, day and night - you don't have to do anything yourself.

Who gets the domain if several people place the same backorder?

Multiple customers can place a backorder on the same domain. Once it becomes available, the rule is first-come, first-served by placement date - whoever placed their backorder earliest is offered the domain first. If registration unexpectedly fails for that customer, the next customer on the waiting list gets the next attempt.
